Painting Flowers: One of My Favorite Things

Painting flowers has been one of my favorites things to do ever since I was a little girl. If you haven’t tried it, I’m here to persuade you to give it a try. God has given us the rainbow of colors for a reason! No excuses about not having any talent. It’s just plain fun!

In elementary school, many of my memories involve hanging out at my mom’s paint shop in the summers and after school. For a few years, she had her own store, offering Tole painting lessons and selling supplies. In the 1970s, Tole and Decorative paining meant painting on anything and everything, It’s similar to how we put words on EVERYTHING now. Cutting boards, wood signs, rolling pins, anything metal, wooden monograms, lanterns with glass sides. . . anything was fair game for some decorative painting. If you aren’t familiar with Tole and Decorative painting, you can check it out here.

The store was an old house that my parents had a contractor friend renovate into the store. As a kid, it was a pretty neat place to hang out. Do you have fond memories of paining when you were small?

Painting flowers, coloring flowers, making mudpies with flowers, then doodling flowers instead of taking notes in class. . .

Yes, this love of paining flowers moved on from college to my early years of marriage and as a mom. I painted my daughter’s room with grass, sky, trees, and, you guessed it, flowers! As part of our homeschool curriculum, all three of my kids did a fair share of paining. My daughter went on to get a fine arts degree.

But here’s the thing. I’m NOT an artist. I’m just a kinda crafty girl who likes to dabble in paint. This past year, I took a painting class for the very first time. I loved it and wanted to share a bit about it with you. Maybe you love paint and color as much as I do!

If you want to paint flowers that are fun and colorful, you should check out Tricia Robinson Art and her God Made Girl Club. Tricia embraces painting WONKY and I just love that idea. It doesn’t have to be perfect. She also incorporates scripture into a lot of her pieces, sketching the words into the background of the art, as well as letting a scripture be your source of inspiration when you begin a project. Not only are you glorifying God in the painting process, you are growing your faith!

This painting is the first one I did in Tricia’s class. I loved learning her process and adding my own twist. She always paints her background black, then goes back over it with white at the end. It makes the colors pop off the page. When I painted these first flowers, I didn’t have enough white to go back in and color it all so I decided to leave it black. Let me know what you think, and if you decide to give it a try! Tag me on IG if you paint some flowers. I would love to see them.

You are precious in His sight,
