Turkey Sweet Potato Chili

Turkey Sweet Potato Chili is a warm, healthy comfort food. You might think that healthy and comfort food don’t belong in the same category, but I’m here to change your mind! This yummy chili recipe is one of those recipes you will keep making and surprisingly, even in the summer. But winter is the best time for a bowl of warmth, even on just a slightly cool day here in Florida.

Turkey and Sweet Potato Combo

Most chili recipes are fairly healthy, and they start with beef. I love ground beef in just about anything. However, turkey is the healthier swap if you are watching your saturated fat. But, the main reason I love to use turkey in this recipe is because turkey and sweet potatoes are the perfect mix. Many generations of families have been enjoying them together at Thanksgiving for a reason. Also, turkey is more budget friendly than beef right now. If you do want to use ground beef in this sweet potato chili, be sure and use a 93/7 lean ground beef to keep it low in calories and fat, but still high in protein.

Spice Up Your Chili Bowl

Want to know the secret to making healthy recipes taste really good? Ground turkey can be a bit bland, so add a lot of flavor, and heat if you are up for it! The Turkey Sweet Potato Chili includes all your favorites: garlic, chili powder, cumin and paprika. In the recipe below I’ll put the quantities I use, but you can always use less if you don’t want as much spice. I don’t like things super spicy, but I do like a ton of flavor. And, there is always a bottle of hot sauce on the table for my husband.

Simple One Pot Meal

To make the chili, you’ll start off chopping an onion and throwing it in a pot on the stove with a little olive oil. When it starts turning golden and opaque, I throw in chopped garlic. Typically I use garlic in the jar that is already chopped because it’s easy.

After the garlic has sauted a few minutes, you’ll add in your ground turkey and cook it until it’s no longer pink. Now, it’s time to add everything else! Pour in a can of diced tomatoes, sea salt, spices, a bay leaf, sweet potatoes, and chicken broth. Pop the lid on your pot and let it simmer for about 25 minutes.

Instead of using canned chicken broth, my go to is the Better than Bouillon Chicken Base. Just add a spoonful to your pot, along water. You’ll love having this always on hand. Also, you can add extra if you need more flavor. I love to buy the larger jar at Costco. It keeps in the fridge for a long time.

Sweet Potatoes: The Good and Bad

Do you love sweet potatoes? I sure do! But I also hate chopping them up. I have found that a sharp knife is the key to a faster chopping experience. I’ve had a knife for a long time that I love for chopping onions, carrots and sweet potatoes. I don’t know where we got it, but it is similar to the ones mentioned in this article. Another option is to buy the potatoes already chopped in the produce section at your grocery store. You will pay a little more but it might be worth it if you have a hard time chopping them up or you are short on time.

Simple Tips for Turkey Sweet Potato Chili

  • chop up your onions before you do anything else.
  • Once you start cooking your onion, peel and dice your sweet potatoes while the onion cooks, stopping to stir the onions every so often.
  • Use a metal pot that includes a lid. The lid is essential for the potatoes to cook well.
  • If you need this to serve more than four, just keep doubling the ingredients to get the serving size you need.
  • You can cook this in the CROCKPOT. Just add all the ingredients, but brown the turkey before you add it. Cook on High for four hours.
  • If you want it to feel a little more like chili, and are okay with increasing the carbs, add a can of drained and rinsed black beans.
  • The chili is good over rice, quinoa or pasta. Again, you will be adding carbs so it depends on your health goals.
